A Note from Our Pastor
Welcome to you!
I’m Reverend Laurie Manning, thanks for taking the time to visit our website! On behalf of Skyline Community Church, I’d like to welcome you here.
As Skyline is a member of the United Church of Christ (UCC) denomination, I’d like to start by sharing a few of my favorite taglines about the UCC:
- We are a progressive faith – what we say is that “our faith is 2,000 years old but our theology isn’t.”
- Regarding the bible, we take the bible seriously, not literally.
- I also like to coin our theology as evolving (and therefore, we have the UCC’s current motto — “God is Still Speaking”).
As a church, we welcome diversity and inclusivity as an Open & Affirming spiritual community. Thus, the statement accompanying our God is Still Speaking motto: “No matter who you are, where you are on life’s journey, you are welcome here.”
We also have an amazing legacy of “firsts” in the Christian history books: We were the first denomination to ordain an African-American, a woman, and an openly gay man. Social justice is central to our faith, reflected in our consistent campaigns over the years advocating for the basic human and civil rights of all people to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. This ideal has been most recently expressed in regard to our campaigns for living wages (for everyone, including immigrants) and healthcare reform.
Last but not least, Skyline Church is a spiritual community on a journey — a journey of faith; and learning what it means to be progressive Christians in a diverse, pluralistic, and evolving world. We seek to take the radically inclusive message of love into our community & wider world. I personally welcome you to join us in this endeavor, and I look forward to meeting you soon!
